EMILY TELAMI
About Me
I am a psychotherapist and counsellor with specialist expertise in intercultural psychotherapy and a particular interest in developmental and early relational trauma. My experience spans working with a diverse range of clients, including as a psychotherapist within the NHS (SW London NHS Foundation Trust) and as a counsellor supporting war veterans in a country affected by conflict.
I believe that lasting internal change is possible, no matter how stuck or hopeless things may feel—especially when you are ready for it. But readiness alone isn’t always enough. We often need structure, support, understanding, and a compassionate presence to walk alongside us. I aim to provide these essentials: a supportive space, an empathic witness, and someone you can think with as you navigate your journey.
How I Work
Allowing ourselves time to pause, reflect, and remember—in the presence of an empathetic other—can help us reconnect with our inner worlds, and clarify what we truly need from life and relationships in the present moment.
Some of the topics I work with include:
• Addiction and eating disorders
• Anxiety, panic, and feelings of emptiness
• Attachment and intimacy difficulties
• Childhood betrayal, neglect, and abuse
• Depression and dissociation
• Sexuality and navigating sexual identity
• Loneliness, isolation, belonging, and experiences of otherness
• Loss, abandonment, and bereavement
• Parental narcissism and family dysfunction
• Racialised injury and internalised racism
• Toxic shame, shamelessness, and transferred guilt
• Trauma (including complex, developmental, intergenerational, and racialised trauma)
I offer therapy in English, Armenian, and Farsi.
Sessions are available online, with limited availability for in-person appointments at my consulting room in Surbiton, Surrey.
Training and Experience
I am a BACP-accredited psychotherapist and counsellor. My training is in integrative psychotherapy, which means I draw on both person-centred therapy (focusing on empathy and personal growth) and psychodynamic therapy (exploring how past experiences influence present feelings and behaviours).
Before establishing my psychotherapy practice, I spent 20 years working in the technology sector—most recently with emerging technologies—and developed a keen interest in how these advances can contribute to mental health research and development.
My therapeutic approach is also shaped by my passion for the arts, philosophy, literature, and an awareness of wider social, economic, and political movements.
Who I work with
I work with adults over 18 and with couples.
Fee
My fee is £65 for individuals and £80 for couples. I review my fees in January each year.
